'I thought it was a toy at first': Man's shock as he digs up 'bomb' in back garden...police sealed off the area after the discovery

A worker stumbled across a 'live' Second World War explosive while digging in a back garden.

A bomb squad was called to the home in Bradford Road, Bolton, and dozens of residents were evacuated following the discovery on Monday afternoon.

Aram Mahmoud was carrying out work to renovate the house, which is currently unoccupied, when he found the device.

He said he thought it was a toy until police arrived at the scene and told him it was 'live and dangerous'.

He added: "We were digging to put concrete posts in and found a rocket.

"At first I thought it was a toy and my friend moved it away.

"We rang the police and they came and made everyone move away.

"It did not scare me, I come from Iraq so I am used to seeing things like that."

Following the discovery, officers sealed off a section of the road between Green Lane and Bishops Road, near to Great Lever Park.

Homes in Bradford Road and Oakleigh Avenue were evacuated as a precaution.

Bomb disposal officers were seen working at the semi-detached property.

Images show them removing the device in a box before leaving the scene at about 2.45pm, followed by two police cars, before a controlled explosion was carried out.

They were followed by two police cars on blue lights.

The road has since been reopened.
