I thought black outdoor furniture was so uninspired until I saw Patrick and Brittany Mahomes' patio – I admit, their chic pieces proved me wrong

Patrick and Brittany Mahomes.

Until today, if you asked me to design my dream patio, a mention of cream, rattan chairs would surely follow. I adore soft neutrals in outdoor spaces, and, until very recently, I assumed that black furniture was too overpowering for a patio or terrace – especially when designing a compact area like my own.

While I adore beautiful black kitchen cabinets, statement sofas, and accents, I never wanted to bring this tone to my outdoor furniture. Then I saw Patrick and Brittany Mahomes' patio chairs, and it changed my opinion instantly.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback decorated his yard with black patio furniture, specifically three luxurious, modern loungers on top of white slab tiles. His arrangement is sleek, chic, and perfectly coordinated. They complement the black iron fence in his backdrop and pair perfectly with the tall green deciduous trees that bring privacy to his garden.

Shop the look

Before seeing Patrick and Brittany Mahomes' patio, I wouldn't have ever introduced black outdoor furniture to my exterior spaces. However, this photo has reminded me of this color's incredible power. Their patio is effortlessly chic and will stand the test of time, just as designer Dan Mazzarini reminds me.

'Black is the eyeliner of any area. Just as any look can use some liner, every room can use some black. It accentuates focal points and it's versatile,' he says.

'Just as there are a thousand different whites, there are just as many blacks. You can get a softer look with charcoal black, or play with different finishes to make it feel more approachable. Try styling your space with wooden frames in a black matte finish.'

Dan's teaching rings true for interior spaces, too; however, this summer, it's time to bring this color outdoors.

'Black is also great as the star of the show. Think about it: a piano in the corner of a living room is the scene stealer. Emulate the look with a glossy black coffee table that bounces light and packs a punch.' In the meantime, I'm saving Patrick's post as the ultimate patio styling blueprint.
