'I think one will go up' - Pundit's promotion verdict after Swansea City v Cardiff City as flashpoint leaves him gobsmacked

Swansea City v Cardiff City will not be a fixture next season because one of them will be promoted, according to former West Ham and England striker turned TV pundit Dean Ashton.

It was the biggest fixture in the Championship on Saturday afternoon and as such, the South Wales derby was pored over by the pundits in the studio of Quest's EFL highlights show.

Cardiff emerged victorious courtesy of Aden Flint's early header, which proved to be the only goal of the game.

It means the Bluebirds have lost only one game in 13 under Mick McCarthy, but they desperately needed to get back on the winning trail, having stalled a little of late.

Swansea, on the other hand, appear to have hit a bit of a speed bump themselves, having won only one of their last four fixtures and now having lost their last two.

But the Swans still sit in a strong position in third place in the table, while the win for Cardiff means they are now just four points off the play-offs with eight games remaining.

And Ashton believes that one of them will get promoted to the Premier League at the end of the campaign.

"No, I think one will go up," Ashton said on Quest' when asked if the South Wales derby will be a fixture next term.

He added: "It was [a must-win for Cardiff]. They are always massive games anyway, these derbies, but this was to keep Cardiff right in the hunt for the play-offs.

"It is no surprise to see it was a set play, they are the best in the division with 23 [goals from set plays], eight is the next best."

It was the toughest-fought derby of the last two seasons, with both sides battling hard for superiority throughout the 90 minutes.

Both had their chances, Cardiff in the first half and Swansea in the second, but it was one flashpoint in particular which caught Ashton's attention.

Kieffer Moore nicked the ball past goalkeeper Freddie Woodman and could have gone down under pressure from the challenge, which might have seen the Swans' keeper sent off.

Indeed, a video emerged of Harry Wilson screaming at his compatriot: "Kieffer! Go down, he’ll get a red card!”

And Ashton was equally surprised that Moore stayed on his feet, before spurning his chance to double the lead when his shot, into an empty net, was cleared by Ryan Bennett after poor contact.

But the former striker, while seemingly gobsmacked that Moore didn't go down under contact, praised the Wales forward for his honesty in staying on his feet.

"This, talk about being honest, Kieffer Moore," Ashton continued.

"When we were watching it, I was saying, 'How has he not gone down?' It's a terrible thing to say, but if he does go down here, which 95 percent of players would, then (Freddie) Woodman would be off and the game would change dramatically.

"I guess we have got to praise him for his honesty - not his finish!"

As for Swansea, they had the better of the opportunities in the second half but just couldn't convert the chances into goals.

Andre Ayew had the best of the lot when he sent his glancing header crashing into the far post from a corner, before Morgan Whittaker tried his luck from range only to be denied by a sprawling Dillon Phillips.

And Ashton believes Swansea must tighten up at the back first and foremost if they are to get their promotion charge back on rack.

"It was one of those days, at the moment for Swansea that is the issue. They have been conceding goals and just not been scoring them at the rate they were," he said.

"Twenty-three attempts and only one on target, that attempt [by Morgan Whittaker].

"It's been a bad run for Swansea, since they've started conceding goals they've really struggled."
