I taste-tested 11 Easter eggs from M&S – this is how they rank

Easter is here – at least when you take a trip to the supermarket. From the best Easter eggs, to all you could need for a roast dinner, the season has some of the best nosh to get stuck into. This includes my personal highlight of the Spring celebration, the best M&S easter eggs.

When it comes to confectionery for gifting and some self-indulgence, there’s little debate that M&S has some of the most delicious Easter treats and this year it’s not disappointed, delivering fun, creative and delicious takes on the seasonal chocolate goods.

From hefty shells chock-full with crunchy pretzel pieces, to speckled mini eggs and half-eggs loaded with pistachio-flavoured goodies, the supermarket’s range is a delight for the sweet-toothed among us.

Gifting for kids? There are some adorable chocolate animal characters like hiccup the hippo, while for vegans, the plant kitchen baby bunny combines smooth Swiss-made vegan chocolate with ground hazelnuts.

With a selection so tempting and prices not cheap, it’s difficult to decide on which treat to pluck for. To help you out, the IndyBest team and I have tasted a handful of the M&S Easter egg range, so read on for our favourites.

  • Best loaded egg – M&S the big daddy loaded half egg, peanut: £12, Ocado.com
  • Best dark chocolate – M&S collection single origin dark chocolate egg: £12, Ocado.com

How I tested

I enlisted a team of testers to try some of the most exciting launches (Alice Reynolds/The Independent)

I raided the supermarket’s Easter shelves and enlisted the help of some other equally chocolate-obsessed testers to find the best Easter eggs from M&S. I was looking for high quality chocolate with well-balanced flavours, decent thickness, plastic-free packaging, and, of course, value for money.

M&S extra thick pistachio and milk chocolate egg

Rating: 5/5

Best: M&S Easter egg overall

Weight: 485g

Price per 100g: £4.12

Why we love it

  • Delicious taste and silky texture
  • The best pistachio chocolate I've tried
  • Real pistachio pieces add crunch
  • High-ticket gift appeal

Take note

  • Expensive

Our best M&S easter egg, the extra thick pistachio and milk chocolate showstopper takes Easter treats to new heights. Housed in a navy and lime green hatbox-style container finished with a ribbon, lifting the lid reveals an elegant, upright egg that’s subtly carved and stamped with the M&S logo in lime green. It’s a real centrepiece.

This egg is beautifully presented (Alice Reynolds/The Independent)

The taste matches the theatre. Thanks to its ultra-thick shell, it’s satisfyingly weighty. Made with 40 per cent milk chocolate, it’s creamy and high quality, wrapped around a smooth pistachio truffle layer. Rich and indulgent, with whole and chopped roasted pistachios for crunch, it avoids being overly sweet, while the milk chocolate balances the nutty filling for a decadent, fad-free finish.

At £20 it’s a splurge, but the generous weight makes it solid value and a memorable Easter treat.

M&S the big daddy loaded half egg, peanut

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: nutty M&S Easter egg

Weight: 315g

Price per 100g: £3.81

Why we love it

  • Deliciously nutty
  • Varied flavours and texture
  • More-ish peanut butter filling

Take note

  • Plastic packaging
  • Only half an egg

Sure to be viral, M&S has released two half egg versions of its big daddy chocolate bar, which took the internet by storm on release. I got my hands on both the peanut and pistachio loaded eggs. The peanut half egg is packed with creamy milk and dark chocolate chunks, peanut butter, roasted peanuts and a layer of soft caramel, topped with roasted peanut pieces and dark chocolate chunks.

Cutting it open releases the oozy caramel from the chunks, which is sweet and decadent, while I found the peanut pieces a delicious textural element. The peanut butter is moreish, only complimented by the inclusion of dark chocolate. For me, this pipped the pistachio loaded egg and as someone who loves M&S peanut butter, was no doubt the best nutty M&S Easter egg.

For peanut lovers, this is divine (Alice Reynolds/The Independent)

While you might feel cheated that this is in fact half an egg, it’s so fully packed with filling that it more than makes up for the other chocolate shell. Plus, at £3.81 per 100g, it’s reasonably priced compared to other M&S easter eggs.

M&S collection single origin dark chocolate egg

Rating: 5/5

Best: dark chocolate M&S Easter egg

Weight: 200g

Price per 100g: £6

Why we love it

  • Rich and indulgent dark chocolate
  • Beautiful prism effect on shell

Take note

  • Expensive
  • Plastic packaging

Designed to match the bold style of the M&S Collection range, this 85 per cent dark chocolate egg looks and tastes premium. Made for true cocoa lovers, it delivers intense flavour without bitterness, with a silky texture that reveals layers of deep, ripe fruit and bright berry notes.

The design gives the egg a luxe look (Alice Reynolds/The Independent)

Crafted from responsibly sourced Peruvian cocoa, according to M&S, and finished with Italian chocolate, quality shines through from the first snap to the last lingering bite. The shell is satisfyingly firm, while the prism-effect finish gives it a jewel-like, gift-worthy feel.

The inner plastic packaging feels unnecessary, but it hardly distracts from an otherwise luxurious dark chocolate treat. At £6 per 100g, it’s the most expensive M&S Easter egg I tried, but you can really taste the premium ingredients used.

M&S speckled eggs

Rating: 5/5

Best: mini M&S Easter eggs

Weight: 150g

Price per 100g: £1.83

Why we love it

  • Crisp shell
  • Velvety chocolate
  • Lovely small Easter gift

Take note

  • Not loads in the bag

If you’re looking for the best M&S mini Easter eggs, its speckled eggs are a staple for me. Rich milk chocolate encased in a deliciously crunchy glazed shell, the speckled eggs make the perfect grazing Easter treat. They have noticeably vividly coloured shells in Spring hues of yellow, orange, green and pink, making them very enticing in the bag. The chocolate is sweet and smooth, with the shell providing that welcome crunch and texture.

(Ocado)

I’m not sure they’ve over-taken Cadbury mini eggs in my view but, they do feel a bit more luxurious and higher quality. If you can’t get enough the speckled eggs also feature in cookies and in a giant crunchy chocolate bar, plus there’s are chocolate orange speckled eggs and mint chocolate speckled eggs for those looking for other mini treats.

M&S eggstra gooey coffee eggs

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: coffee M&S easter egg

Weight: 160g

Price per 100g: £3.75

Why we love it

  • Rich coffee flavour
  • Cute packaging and design

Take note

  • Coffee flavour might not be to everyone's taste

Ideal for gifting, there are three gooey eggs flavours at M&S this year including caramel, pistachio and coffee – the latter of which I tested. They come neatly packaged in a cardboard egg box, which is a nice eco-friendly touch, with the eggs inside the box wrapped in paper.

You get two silky smooth milk chocolate eggs and two dark chocolate eggs (ideal for those with varied cocoa tastes), which have a creamy vanilla and coffee filling.

These are great mid-range gift for coffee lovers (Alice Reynolds/The Independent)

The eggs have a beautiful silky exterior with an egg crack-like engraving. The dark chocolate egg compliments the depth of the coffee, while the milk chocolate is a super sweet treat. The addition of vanilla is a worthy one, working to elevate the overall flavour.

M&S the original very moreish munch egg

Rating: 4/5

Best: creative M&S Easter egg

Weight: 315g

Price per 100g: £3.17

Why we love it

  • Fun concept
  • Munch goody bag has lots of flavours and textures
  • Good balance of sweetness and salt

Take note

  • Plastic packaging

The supermarket has transformed another of its best-selling sweet treats into an Easter treat – this time it's the moreish munch, which I named the best creative M&S easter egg. The egg comes in two parts – the munch (which consists of chocolate-coated popcorn, almonds in a salted caramel coating, dark chocolate salted pretzels and milk chocolate peanut clusters) and a chocolate version of the squirrel icon.

The munch bag is well sized and a tasty extra (Alice Reynolds/The Independent)

The munch goody bag is a fun and tasty mix with the dark chocolate pretzels, my favourite of the lot. The chocolate squirrel is super cute with its puffed up cheeks and buck teeth, and taste-wise it’s sweet and nutty.

I like the concept of there being two parts to the egg, but think it might be more fun if you were able to crack the squirrel open and find the munch goody bag inside.

M&S hiccup the hippo

Rating: 4.5/5

Best: M&S Easter egg for kids

Weight: 155g

Price per 100g: £4.52

Why we love it

  • High attention to detail
  • Silky chocolate

Take note

  • Plastic packaging

Hiccup, a milk and white chocolate shaped hippo inspired by the viral Moo Deng hippo, joins four animal characters to make up the M&S Easter egg range for kids this year. The range spans Toby the T-rex, Shaggy the shetland, Ralph the cavapoo, and new Sunny the sloth, which should cover most interests.

For a kids’ egg, the attention to detail is really high; standing on grass, Hiccup is a swirly mix of the chocolate with ruby cheeks, a dotted nose, dark eyes and textured skin.

The hippo is carefully designed (Alice Reynolds/The Independent)

The chocolate is thick and silky – actually one of the best tasting of the supermarket’s bunch. While the plastic inner is a little disappointing, the cardboard is painted nicely with an Easter pastel theme and a has a sweet story behind the hippo on the side.

M&S plant kitchen baby bunny

Rating: 5/5

Best: dairy-free M&S Easter egg

Weight: 100g

Price per 100g: £3.50

Why we love it

  • Simple and sweet
  • Vegan chocolate is excellent

There are three Easter options for vegans this year at M&S – a chocolate egg, bunny bar and the hollow baby bunny. At £3.50, the bunny makes a nice low-key gift for those looking for free-from options and is our best dairy-free M&S Easter egg for 2026. The blue foil packaging is simple but sweet, with eyelashes drawn on to the face to make it look like it's sleeping.

There's no missing out with this Easter bunny (Alice Reynolds/The Independent)

As someone who eats dairy, the bunny is made from a really delicious chocolate that’s barely distinguishable from M&S’s milk-containing chocolate. The addition of ground hazelnuts give it a subtle praline flavour and a lovely smoothness that compliments the cocoa.

M&S the big daddy loaded half egg, pistachio

Rating: 4/5

Best: sweet pistachio M&S Easter egg

Weight: 315g

Price per 100g: £3.81

Why we love it

  • Thick chocolate
  • Lots of different textures

Take note

  • Very sweet
  • Plastic packaging

It would have been a missed opportunity if M&S weren’t to do a take on its viral big daddy pistachio bar. Like the bar (which comes in at £8.50), the egg isn’t cheap at £12, but once you see all the chocolate piled up inside the shell and feel its weight, it feels worth the splurge. The half egg has a thick shell that’s topped with pistachio, with soft caramel chunks, chewy caramel pieces and roasted pistachio chunks.

You get soft caramel chunks, chewy caramel pieces and roasted pistachio chunks in this egg (Alice Reynolds/The Independent)

Taste-wise the pistachio and caramel chunks are soft and delicious, while the chewy caramel pieces and roasted pistachio chunks add a little texture. The pistachio flavour, I would say, is subtle and is slightly overwhelmed by the egg’s overall sweetness. Creativity-wise, this scores top marks but the taste didn’t wow me or my fellow testers.

Compared to other pistachio Easter treats I’ve tried this year, it definitely injects some interest into a trend that feels like it should already be over. If you like your Easter chocolate super sweet, I’d go for the big daddy loaded half egg. But for a premium twist on pistachio, I’d choose the M&S extra thick pistachio and milk chocolate egg.

M&S Marks choc milk chocolate egg

Rating: 4/5

Best: sweet and salty M&S Easter egg

Weight: 294g

Price per 100g: £4.08

Why we love it

  • Great texture, which makes each bite interesting
  • Has a subtle saltiness

Take note

  • Plastic packaging

Here’s another Easter take on M&S’s chocolate bars and this time it’s the Marks choc milk bar, which has been reworked into an egg. The Marks choc milk egg has a milk chocolate shell with salted pretzel pieces, salted caramel and honey almond nougat. The shell is generously packed with the pieces giving texture to each bite.

The shell is filled with a mouth-watering mix (Alice Reynolds/The Independent)

The nougat comes through nicely to add depth to the flavour and the caramel complements the salty pretzel pieces. This egg went down really well with our IndyBest testers for its complex taste and texture. For me, I would welcome an even saltier hit from the pretzel to balance the chocolate but I do like a punchy savoury taste.

M&S caramel and milk chocolate crispy clouds egg

Rating: 3.5/5

Best: crunchy M&S Easter egg

Weight: 274g

Price per 100g: £4.30

Why we love it

  • Enjoyable crunchy texture
  • Good thickness

Take note

  • Some may find it too sweet
  • Plastic packaging

I’ve had a long love-affair with M&S cornflake chocolate – once a staple of my childhood picnics, the supermarket has since elevated the taste with the addition of crunchy cornflake crispy clouds, which combine corn flakes with salted caramel almond nougat. This Easter egg is a take on this latest, more refined creation of the breakfast cereal chocolate.

The egg arrives already split in two (Alice Reynolds/The Independent)

Opening up the box, the crispy clouds egg is a hefty oval that helpfully is already split in two to aid cracking. It has a milk chocolate shell that’s visibly packed with pieces of salted caramel almond nougat and crispy cornflakes. The chocolate and its additions are sweet and moreish – perhaps a little too sweet for me and could do with a something salty to lift the flavour.

Our IndyBest testers were divided on the texture – for some it didn’t do enough, but I found the crunch satisfying and it conjured sweet nostalgia. One thing’s for sure, if you’re a fan of the cereal clusters it’s an eye-catching egg that will hit the spot.

What is the best M&S Easter egg?

The most beautiful presented and glorious tasting egg, it has to be the M&S extra thick pistachio and milk chocolate egg that takes the crown as the best M&S Easter egg. As someone not overly fussed about the Dubai chocolate craze or other pistachio flavoured goods, I’m pleasantly surprised at how much this impressed. At £20, it’s a lot to fork out for an Easter treat but believe me, as a gift, or a bit of self-indulgence, you won’t be disappointed. For dark chocolate lovers, the M&S collection single origin dark chocolate egg is not to be missed, while if peanuts are your thing, the M&S the big daddy loaded half peanut egg is a decadent half-shell. If you’re gifting Easter eggs to kids and want something a little less decadent, you can’t go wrong with Hiccup or one of his pals.
