I stayed at Nottingham's cheapest 'hotel' and was pleasantly surprised

When you're only in Nottingham for a night there isn't much of a need for all the usual hotel luxuries.

Who needs a hairdryer, kettle, private bathroom - or even a window?

Sometimes all you need is a pillow on which to rest your weary head.

That's why when choosing the location for my mid-week stay in the city, I went for the cheapest I could find - Igloo Hybrid.

I was so tight, in fact, that I intended to stay in a window-less room for the sake of a few quid. I paid £36 pounds in total.

Stuffed into one of Old Market Square's back pockets, the self-described 'hostel meets hotel' is unassuming from the outside.

The gated entrance beside Cafe Nero off Wheeler Gate makes it a little hard to spot at first - but all the more intriguing.

However, from the moment I was buzzed into the front door I was made to feel at home. This was largely due to the friendliness of the receptionist. I imagine these are qualities that come from its hostel, community-feel, half of the description.

Another thing that stood out was the quirkiness of the interior, with colourful bright sketches adorning the walls.

I was then given the good news I was receiving a free upgrade - I didn't even tell them I was writing a review.

"Seeing as no-one else is staying here," he said.

If I were staying in a hostel that didn't look like it was inhabited by Mr Tumble, that sentence would've been quite disturbing.

I was then shown to my room, where the décor got even quirkier. My room for the night was a pinky red striped hut, less masculine than its neighbouring fisherman and hunter huts, but I couldn't care less as this one had a window.

The hotel's emptiness also cleared me to use the shared bathroom facilities to (almost) their full capacity, guilt-free. They were a little basic and rough around the edges, but that was to be expected.

Downsides, not that there were many, also include the fact the room was a little boxy and the bed was on the firm side - from what I remember. But that didn't stop me getting my forty winks.

On the whole, I was pleasantly surprised by Igloo. For its price tag I feared the worst, but thanks to its friendly staff, general cleanliness and Cbeebies-like artistry, I'd be open to a return.
