'I saw this truck going sideways': Video shows truck on fire dangling off bridge

The truck was described as driving "sideways" by witnesses before it crashed.

Eyewitness video shows a frozen-food truck hanging over the side of a bridge after it crashed and burst into flames on a New South Wales highway.

The Hume Highway was in lockdown on Wednesday morning after the truck crashed on the Wingecarribee Bridge at Berrima in the NSW Southern Highlands.

The B-double truck crashed into a safety barrier and was hanging over the side of the bridge when it ignited shortly before 8:30am.

A witness to the crash, Mel, said the truck was on its side when it slammed against the guardrail.

"Saw this truck going sideways down the road, on the bridge, on the other side of the road, on fire," she said.

"I could feel the heat from the truck on the opposite side of the road."

Footage of the crash shows black smoke and flames billowing out of the wreckage as it dangled from the roadway.

The truck driver, a man aged in his 60s, was treated at the scene before being taken to Bowral District Hospital with minor injuries.

Crews from the Rural Fire Service spent hours trying to extinguish the flames and a small area of scrub that caught alight below the bridge.

The crash closed the Hume Highway in both directions for several hours but southbound lanes were reopened in the afternoon.

The clean-up and salvage operation continued in northbound lanes late on Wednesday.

Another dramatic truck crash on Wednesday, in the NSW town of Singleton, also caused chaos on the road.

An allegedly stolen fertiliser truck crashed into a building at Singleton, sparking explosions and a major rescue operation.
