'I said she needed to get out of the van and start swimming' - Woman rescued after driving van into city centre quay

A woman was rescued from freezing water after driving her van into a city centre quay.

The vehicle ended up in Vantage Quay, off Brewer Street, just before 7.30pm on Saturday.

Police say the driver managed to escape the vehicle unhurt.

Vantage Quay resident Josh Fielding said he helped rescue the woman from the icy water.

Josh, 31, said: "I live in a ground floor apartment and I was playing on my PlayStation with my partner when I heard a splash.

"Officers arrived and located a vehicle within the dock." (ASP)

"I looked out the window and there was a small white van, a VW Caddy, bobbing up and down in water.

"I could see some movement inside so I climbed over the balcony to help.

"I was looking for some rings at the side of the water and there weren't any.

"When I ran back there was a woman sitting with both legs hanging out of the van.

"Then calm as you like she was saying: 'Excuse me. Excuse me.'

"She was going to throw her handbag towards me but I was quite frank with her.

"I said she needed to get out the van and start swimming and not stop.

"So she did, and when she got within about a metre of the edge I pulled her out.

"The paramedics checked her over and she seemed fine. She knocked on later to say thank you."

It's not clear how the van ended up in the water.

Josh believes that the woman may simply not have seen the water, which was frozen over.

"Some people park down one of the streets and two of the lights are broken," he added.

"There are no bollards either. I think she may just not have see the water in the dark as it was frozen over."

A spokesperson for GMP said: "At 19.24 today emergency services attended Vantage Quay on Brewer Street following reports of a road traffic collision.

"Officers arrived and located a vehicle within the dock. The occupants had escaped prior to arrival uninjured.

"Police enquiries are ongoing."
