Johnston Press has issued a press release about the “new” editorial team at i, although newness may be stretching matters a little. There are few surprises since most have been appointed from within the Independent family.
As was previously announced, the current editor Oliver (Oly) Duff will retain the chair he has had since June 2013. And Andy Webster will continue as his deputy.
Among the other department heads will be three assistant editors: Fran Yeoman (news), Siobhan Norton (production) and Hanna Tavner (weekend). Rebecca Armstrong will be features editor, with Sophie Batterbury as picture editor and Alice Jones as arts editor. Elizabeth Anderson is joining as business editor from the Daily Telegraph.
Other key roles are filled by Alasdair McKay (sports editor), Memphis Barker (comment editor), Michael Day (foreign editor), Nigel Morris (political editor), Tim Alden (art director) and Henrik Pettersson (graphics editor).
The chief reporter will be Cahal Milmo, inheriting the job he had at the Indy, and Kevin Garside gets the chief sports correspondent slot.
They are part of a 50-strong editorial team due to produce their first Johnston Press-published issue on Monday 11 April. They will be quartered in the Daily Mail’s Kensington building in a office overlooking the atrium.
Duff spoke of it being “an exciting new chapter for i” and having “a brilliantly talented team.” And Johnston’s editor-in-chief, Jeremy Clifford, in welcoming i’s team into the company’s fold, spoke of the “huge opportunity” to combine their expertise with that of the publisher’s 900 regional and local journalists “to provide our readers with effective and relevant content at a national level.”
