'I refused to move seats to help plane passenger - he was livid but it wasn't safe'

When you travel by plane, there is always a list of rules you have to follow before the flight takes off and while it lands - including not wearing headphones and keeping your seatbelt fastened until the plane has reached its required altitude.

But one woman has been left questioning her own decision to follow these safety rules after the passenger sitting next to her demanded she undoes her seatbelt and gets up so that he could pass her and use the bathroom, despite having been told it wasn't safe to do so.

The woman said she has a fear of flying, so when her plane hit some turbulence and the passengers were told by the flight attendants to fasten their seatbelts, she listened without hesitation.

Moments later, however, the man sitting next to her in the middle seat asked the woman to move so he could go to the toilet - but she refused to budge, citing the seatbelt rule as her reason.

In a post on Reddit, she said: "I should preface this by saying that I have a pretty bad fear of flying so I am much more uptight than normal when I’m on a plane, hence being unsure if this was reasonable.

"I was on a flight in an aisle seat and we hit some turbulence as we started to descend. The seatbelt sign was on and the flight attendants had come on the mic a few times reminding people to please not get up.

"Then the guy in the middle seat next to me asked me to get up so he could use the restroom. I said sorry, but we aren't supposed to get up right now because of the turbulence. He asked again and seemed frustrated, but I didn't budge.

"On the one hand, serious injuries can happen when people aren't belted in during turbulence. On the other, I see tons of people ignoring the seatbelt sign so maybe I should just stick with the window seat if I'm going to be a stickler for the rules."

Commenters on the post agreed with the woman, as they said she was right for following the safety rules that are put in place for a reason.

One person said: "Rules are there to keep you safe and when rules start getting broken everybody is at risk. Sticking to the window is a good solution but you are NOT the a**hole. You did nothing wrong."

While another added: "Rules are there for a reason, especially on a plane. It's unfortunate that flight attendants have to repeatedly remind passengers to stay in their seats because of all the morons who refuse to follow the rules. The guy next to you should've gone pee before the signs came on. Go with the window seat from now on. It'll save you a lot of trouble."

And a third wrote: "You had every right to refuse for your own safety."
