A man has faced a backlash at his job after refusing to chip in for an expensive gift for a boss who was leaving, despite only having worked there for a couple of months.
He's an intern at this company so didn't deem it necessary for him to cough up cash for someone he barely knows.
But his colleagues have cottoned onto his refusal and are now giving him disapproving looks in the office.
In his Reddit post, the man added that he hardly knows the people he works with and never agreed to contribute towards the present.
The man, who remained anonymous, explained: "I am an intern in a big company, but still, an intern. I make a decent amount for the moment in career I'm [in] but nothing outrageous.
"Last week my now former boss left the company and here's where the problem begin: he's a really nice dude, and it was good to work with him. One of the girls in the team had the idea to give him a goodbye-gift."
An email was then sent round to tell people how much they should pay for the expensive chocolates they had bought for him.
"I kind of ignored it, but now I feel some weird looks towards me," he said.
"It's not a huge amount, but it would make some difference in my balance, but the point is I never agreed to that, and I'm here only two months so I barely know these people."
In response, many sided with him and said he should not be expected to chip in for the gift.
One person wrote: "You barely know these people and, right now, it you be a hardship for you to contribute. Feel free to ignore the weird looks.
Another stated: "I am incredulous that someone even has the audacity to ask an intern to contribute."
A third penned: "It's not okay to expect people to give a specific amount."
