'I refuse to change my baby daughter's name even though my family have demanded it'

A mum has hit out at her husband's family after they reacted furiously when the couple revealed their chosen baby name - and demanded they choose a different one.

The pregnant woman explained that she and her husband had drawn up a long list of girls names ahead of the arrival of their daughter, and eventually whittled it down to one they liked best.

They have been using the name to refer to the baby for the last four months of her pregnancy, and said their older child already even refers to their sibling by the name.

The expectant mum said the name they had chosen was coincidentally the same name as her husband's aunt's late mother, who she had never met.

But she said: "When his aunt and her two daughters found out we had chosen that name, they were furious because they had planned to name one of their future daughters that name (neither of them are planning to have children anytime soon).

"We didn’t know they had planned to do that and it wasn’t something we thought about during the process of choosing her name.

"They said it should have been obvious to us that it would be a choice for a girl’s name for one of them."

The mum argued that she sees no issues with two girls in the family having the same name, but her in-laws responded to say it would "cheapen" the name for any of their future children.

She informed them that she's not willing to change the name she had picked as she feels like it is "already my baby girl's name at this point".

After asking for advice on Reddit, many people blasted her in-laws for their stance, as one wrote: "Use the name. They don’t have copyright over it and honestly, it’s ridiculous to lay claim to a name for a hypothetical future child. They may give birth to only boys!"

A second advised: "There's three Pauls in my family. Everyone survived. And seriously, if the memory is so easily cheapened by an unintentional name cross over, they have some personal work to do that has nothing to do with you."

And another simply added: "You have the kid, you get to name them. Pretty simple stuff."
