'I prepare food for my family a year in advance - it saves me so much money'

A savvy mum has revealed she grows and prepares food for her family a whole year in advance - and she says there are so many benefits.

Becky Porter and her husband Cameron have four children and they moved to a 10,000 square foot farm in Arkansas, United States.

Giving up a traditional way of life, Becky and her family have been sharing their lives on YouTube on Instagram.

They built their own home, grew their own food and are working towards being completely self-sufficient.

"We had a vision to grow and preserve a year's supply of vegetables and meat for our family, a goal like that takes a large amount of commitment and sacrifice," she said in a recent video.

"With all of the effort it takes to grow vegetables we vowed not to let any go to waste.

"We preserved a little of our garden bounty every day - this is the secret of preserving a year’s supply of food you need to be consistent."

With their children's help, Becky and Cameron dried peppers, apples and summer squash as well as canning and freezing vegetables.

They fermented cabbages, made kimchi cucumbers and created their very own sauces, showing off their huge pantry filled with food that would get through the whole winter.

"We came up with different ways to make it fun as a family, we would move the TV to the kitchen and watch a movie together as we worked," said Becky.

"Sometimes we would just talk and other times we would make it a game."

Becky would often stay up until the early hours preparing the food.

"Many times I would stay up till 4 in the morning finishing a batch of food," she revealed.

"Even though there were moments of difficulty I felt a deep sense of purpose."

Explaining her reasoning for making the change, Becky said she was concerned about additives and preservatives in supermarket food.

"I didn’t want others to control what I put in my body and learned how to grow and preserve food over the last 15 years," she said.

"It’s not easy but many worthwhile things in life take patience and endless effort."
