'I painted my five-year-old daughter's toenails and my husband is furious'

Some children get really excited when their parents allow them to do similar 'beauty treatments' to them - if a child sees their mum getting a gel manicure, for example, their parents might feel comfortable painting their nails in normal polish afterward so their child can feel 'grown up' and like they're following in their mum's footsteps.

One woman took to Mumsnet to tell the forum that her husband had gone mad when she'd done just that, however. She'd painted her little girl's toenails because she'd asked her to, but he accused her of being 'inappropriate', but the woman disagreed and thought it was cute.

The mum wrote: "We are off on holiday tomorrow, I painted my daughter's toenails and my husband has thrown a tantrum and told me to remove it talking about it being inappropriate etc.

"I tried to compromise suggesting to change it to clear purple glitter husband is adamant he wants it off before our trip tomorrow. Am I being unreasonable to refuse to remove it? Is it such a big deal? I mean I couldn’t care less if her toes are painted or not, she asked and I obliged."

Other mums defended the woman's decision saying that it was harmless.

One wrote: "It’s like dress up I don’t see the issue whatsoever."

Another commented: "Mine used to love having her toes done when I did mine at age about three. Not often. Just for fun. And not bright red. She was fond of pastels!"

Others said that she shouldn't remove it, writing: "Has he said what about it is inappropriate? No, kids don't need makeup but a bit of nail varnish for a holiday which will come off before she goes back to school then there's no harm. I'd stand my ground on this."

"I'd also question why his opinion on this is more important than yours", another suggested.

One mum wrote: "The toenails is what I started with when my daughter started asking for nail varnish. It's subtle and totally appropriate."
