PlayStation State of Play June 2025 saw plenty of big-name announcements, with news on Nioh 3, Silent Hill f, Ghost of Yotei being clear highlights. But the title that most caught my attention when it comes to game art was a total surprise.
Sea of Remnants looks like quite a curio. It's a free-to-play turn-based puppet pirate-themed RPG where you have to seek lost memories with '300+ companions' across an open world map populated by mermaids, huge crabs, flying serpents, and, obviously, other pirates. I can't speak about the gameplay, but character design has me intrigued.
According to publisher NetEase Games, Sea of Remnants is "a visually rich ocean adventure RPG". It was developed by Joker (Identity V) and is coming to PC and mobile as well as PS5.
It's hard to define the aesthetic. There are comic book influences going on and an Arcane-like glitch effect on faces. Some have compared it to Honkai: Star Rail meets Sea of Thieves and Identity V, with Expedition 33 vibes in the combat, but it looks like its own thing.
What's not clear is how the monetisation happens. There are graphics that make this look like it's going to be gacha game, and Steam lists it as multiplayer as well as single player, which would explain those 300+ companions. And we know that pirates like loot boxes.
