The benefits of a Mulberry silk pillowcase are by no means a new discovery, but I've always been skeptical about making a purchase.
Yes, the best silk pillowcases feel luxurious, look shiny, and promise to take care of your skin and hair, but are they really worth the money?
I wasn't convinced, but since I was already hunting for the best bed sheets, I decided to branch out: I spotted a Mulberry silk pillowcase from Brooklinen, and my interest was piqued. (It came highly recommended by our sleep editor, who assured me she used it on our own bed).
Although it's 100% pure silk, Brooklinen's offering is also machine washable (and OEKO-TEX® certified, for chemical safety). So, no lengthy hand-washing required, just gorgeously soft silk. Surely it was worth a try?
Before I bought my Mulberry silk pillowcase, I was struggling with two things: frizzy hair, and blemishes on my cheeks. (I am a face-in-the-pillow kind of sleeper, which isn't ideal when it comes to keeping my skin away from bacteria and dirt.) Silk pillowcases promise to solve both of these problems, but I always doubted that they'd actually make a difference. After just a few weeks, however, my mind has changed.

Upon initial inspection, the Mulberry silk pillowcase from Brooklinen is undeniably soft, and it looks great (I chose the blush color and it definitely adds a touch of extravagance to my bed). After putting it to use, however, two more things stood out to me. The first is its cooling effect; this is what many reviewers mentioned, and I can see why. The silk is breathable and, while not too thin, definitely helps to prevent overheating. I don't need to flip my pillowcase during the night, either – it stays cool to the touch right up until the morning.
The second thing to note (which I hadn't considered) is that the Brooklinen pillowcase features a side-envelope closure, rather than a zipper. While this might be a nuisance for some (since the pillowcase can shift around during the night), I found it to be surprisingly convenient: since I do wake most mornings with my face glued to my pillow, I don't have to worry about a zipper poking me in the eye or leaving unsightly indents on my forehead.

Of course, this is all before I considered whether a Mulberry silk pillowcase remedied those two initial concerns: my skin and hair. Sadly, those pesky blemishes just can't be prevented by silk alone (no matter how luxurious), but the material still feels less abrasive on my face, which is always a win, and I'm no longer afflicted by pillow creases, either.
When it comes to my hair, meanwhile, I really do think the pillowcase has made a difference. I'm still no stranger to a bedhead, but the frizz isn't quite as extreme thanks to the reduced friction between my hair and pillow. The Mulberry silk pillowcase might not have changed my life, but I'll never look at a cotton pillowcase the same way again...
