I never found myself fitting into the saas-bahu genre, so it took me two decades to make a comeback on TV: Kitu Gidwani

In the 80s and 90s, actress Kitu Gidwani was a part of many hit shows like Swabhimaan, Trishna, Air Hostess and Shaktimaan. Thereafter, she went missing from TV. Now, she is making a comeback after two decades.

The actress will play Rani sa, a queen, who believes in following traditions and old customs and has her own set of ideals.

The actress is now constantly being asked this one question - what took her so long to make a comeback on TV. Kitu shares, "Since I am coming back after two decades on TV, the first thing that I am asked is 'why'. I had my reasons to come back. It is not that I had disappeared and was not doing any work at all. I was acting in web shows and did a few films, too. But, I never found myself fitting into the saas-bahu genre and so I never tried doing TV in the last two decades. I always felt that I needed a stronger role."

Sharing why she chose Hum Rahein Na Rahein Hum as her comeback project, she says, "It is a strong role. I am playing a queen and it was something interesting. We are shooting for the show in Umbergaon and I felt that the show had a good concept. The Rani sa is portrayed to be very traditional who follows a certain way of life while life has moved on in the modern world, so her family is caught up in between. I found it quite exciting. I am hoping that viewers will be able to connect with my role because now, I am not an air hostess or Svetlana of Swabhimaan."

Along with TV shows, Kitu has been part of many films like Fashion, Dhobi Ghat, Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na and Student of the Year. She says, "When I was not doing TV for two decades, I focussed all my energies on films. Though it was not easy, I managed to find interesting roles. I am glad that now TV is getting into an interesting space where the makers are again experimenting with good content and actors like us want to make a comeback."
