About 30 years ago I took out a unit trust policy. I recall the name of the company and even the salesman, but since I have lost the paperwork, how do I go about accessing the money? SW, London
The first obvious step is to contact the company, which may since have changed its name, and see if they are able to help. There is a chance that your name and address alone might be enough to locate the policy. Otherwise, if you can unearth any more details such as a reference number or the name of the policy, the Investment Association might be able to help you track it down.
You can also set up an account with Experian’s Unclaimed Assets Register, which will put you in touch with the relevant financial provider if it is a company associated with Experian. It charges £25 per search.
