'I nearly cried this morning' - Consett residents react as Tory MP Richard Holden wins historic vote

North West Durham has never had a Conservative seat in its history and has been held by Labour since 1950.

But on Thursday night fell a historic victory for the Conservatives Party with Labour MP Laura Pidcock losing her seat to Tory MP Richard Holden.

And after speaking to residents in Consett on Friday, there is a strong sense of devastation across the town.

Many residents are left shocked at the results due to the town being a strong Labour supporting area since they can remember.

Clothes store owner, Bob Birkett, has always backed Labour and is disappointed with the general election results .

The 55-year-old said: "I’m just devastated and it’s hard to even put into words.

"The result is just all to do with Brexit and ignorant people thinking it will stop immigrants.

"The people who have voted Tory have forgotten about NHS and schools and now we have to suffer the consequences."

The 25-year-old said: "It's just devastating and heartbreaking I nearly cried this morning.

"This was said to be the most important vote of our generation and I was shocked and angry that a lot of people I knew didn't vote.

"I would have been parent less if it wasn't for NHS and Labour's support, I am now worried about the future now."

Marjorie Hunter voted for the first time in her life and decided to also support a Labour.

The 68-year-old said: "I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Labour who supported the NHS.

"I would have died with cancer not being able to pay charges for health care.

"I’m really surprised at the vote as here has always been Labour."

However, food store owner John Rider is delighted with the outcome after he voted the Conservative Party.

The 32-year-old said: "I voted as it was the best out of a poor bunch.

"I am very happy with the results with being a small business owner I feel like I will benefit.

"It is the right result as we live in a democracy and we have to go ahead with what the people voted for the first time around."
