'I married my holiday romance - pals thought it would never last'

On holiday, it's easy to fall head over heels for someone - thanks to the sun, holiday vibe, and of course, a few drinks.

In many ways, there's no better time to find a partner - you're feeling great, looking your best and are looking for a fun time in the sun.

There's nothing like a holiday romance - falling in love across the beach, the bar or the pool.

But it's an unwritten rule that they usually end when you're back home and reality hits as you return to your nine to five, while your holiday fling lives miles away.

But for a tiny, minority, a holiday romance can stand the test of time, including one couple, who have been together after meeting in Spain 26 years ago.

Rachael Woodridge, 52, met her now husband, Mark Woodridge, 51, in 1996, when Rachael was 25 and Mark was 24, and the pair have been inseparable ever since.

With pals joking it wouldn't last six months, the couple is now 23 years married with two children - and Rachael was convinced they would be a match at first sight.

She said: "It sounds crazy but when Mark walked into the bar, I told my friend that him and I would be in item by the end of the night.

"My friend laughed at me and we put a bet on, that night I told him if he kissed me I'd split the bet money with him, so he kissed me and we have been inseparable ever since."

Rachael had been living in Moraira in the Costa Blanca, for nine years, when Mark strolled into a local bar. He had been visiting the fishing village for five years - but wasn't set to visit again.

"It is like it was fate that we met when we did, as we never would have done after that year," recalls Rachael.

"Once he had returned back home to Wales we spoke every single day, and then I booked a flight back to the UK to stay with my Nana in Essex as my parents lived in Spain. I said if I was able to get a job in my time being back in Essex I would stay.

"I got a job as a waitress and didn't return to Spain.

"Mark was at university but he travelled weekly to visit before we moved in together when we got our own flat."

Once home, Rachael and Mark proved their friends wrong who doubted they'd last. The couple spoke every day, even writing letters to each other when Rachael still lived in Spain.

For the couple, the Spanish village still holds great significance. They've visited twice, and even brought their kids to the special spot.

On holiday, you often cross paths with strangers very different to you - but Rachael and Mark clicked instantly.

Rachael said: "We have the same sense of humour and get on so well It's not even like we have the same groups of friends we have nothing in common together but we just work so well.

"We have been back to the same place twice since we met, bringing our children and reminiscing about the old times.

"It felt like we were going back in time. I have never done anything like this before. You hear horror stories about holiday romances and heartbreaks.

"We technically shouldn't have worked as he lived in Wales and I lived in Essex but we made it happen."
