Former Leeds United target Gavin Whyte admits that missing out on a move to the Whites likely worked out for the best, stating that he probably would have just played Under-23 games had he joined them.
The 23-year-old was heavily linked with a switch to Elland Road last season after impressing in the NIFL Premiership for Crusaders, and looked set to be headed to West Yorkshire .
But the deal ultimately never materialised with Marcelo Bielsa arriving at the the club, and the Northern Ireland international ultimately headed to Oxford United instead after the Whites dropped out,
There, Whyte flourished as a member of the first team under Karl Robinson and the winger has now told the Belfast Telegraph that his move to the League One outfit was the right move for him with hindsight.
"Last summer there was a lot of talk about interest from certain clubs," he stated. "Leeds were one of the main ones mentioned.
"At that stage, [that] was where I wanted to go because everyone knows they are a massive club and I knew Stuart Dallas.
"Obviously it's easy to say it now, but I know I made the right decision in the end going to Oxford because I played a lot of games in the first team and I'm really enjoying it.
"If I'd signed for Leeds I probably would have played a lot of Under-23 games and I may not have enjoyed it as much or progressed the way I have at Oxford.
"I can't for one second sit back and think I've made it, but I'd like to think I contributed to a decent season for the club."
