I made the McDonald’s 'loaded fries' TikTok hack and felt slightly ashamed

After seeing my For You Page on TikTok dominated by people having loaded fries from McDonald's, I was intrigued but apprehensive to try it out.

Loaded fries involve covering chips with several ingredients, including cheese, other food and sauces. I’m a big fan of loaded fries and McDonalds is my go-to option when I want a reliable and quick takeaway option so I was intrigued.

While McDonald's does not have this as a menu option, people on TikTok have been showing how you can create your own using its existing menu options. It involves ordering a large fries, either chicken selects or nuggets, mozzarella dippers, a double cheeseburger and two sauces.

You then put all the fries onto a plate and break up the chicken, beef and mozzarella dippers over them. The final touch is you covering the food in two sauces of your choice.

TikTok user @laurenkategriffiths rated the hack 10/10 when she tried it herself. She said: “It’s just amazing. I can see why this trend is going mad.”

However, to me this combination looked quite disgusting. I instinctively felt there were too many combinations of flavours as well.

When I followed the steps and made my own, it didn’t look much better. Broken up bits of takeaway food, topped with contrasting sauces, didn’t particularly whet my appetite.

Thankfully, I did enjoy the taste of it. It was a novelty to be able to have chips, a chicken select, a mozzarella dipper and bits of beef all in one mouthful.

However, I couldn’t help but feel that this was an extraordinarily messy way to enjoy fast food. The novelty of varied flavours was very nice, but grew tiresome after a while.

It certainly filled me up, but I was left staring at unappetising leftovers. Unsurprisingly, none of my colleagues were willing to have some either.

I did enjoy the meal overall, however I don’t think I’d make it again. The judgement alone I would get from anyone in my presence would be too strong.

It was interesting to change up my usual orders from McDonalds, but that excitement soon turned into a strange form of shame. Perhaps the shame derived from the price - including delivery fees, this came to £18.57, which is a bit much for a McDonald's.

The loaded fries hack is proof that foods can taste well on their own, but don’t necessarily work together. I’d only recommend this if you don’t mind your food looking terrible and being judged for eating it.
