I made an 'at home' Maccies and I wouldn't even feed it to my dog

After seeing viral videos on social media showing how to make a McDonald's at home, I decided to give it a go for myself to see if it was worth the hype… and effort.

Maccies for me, has got to be one of the best, easy fast food restaurants. I don’t think there’s ever been a time when a Maccies hasn’t hit the spot.

After being fairly new to the air fryer world, I came across a video on Instagram showing how to make Maccies chicken nuggets in the air fryer at home. I was impressed with how easy these looked to make and how much they actually resembled a Maccies chicken nugget.

The viral video on Instagram, has racked up a whopping 49.5m views since being posted. After seeing that the video had gone viral, I knew these were the nuggets I had to make.

Obviously, I couldn’t attempt to make the nuggets without finding a video of how to make Maccies chips, which I found it on TikTok and it has had more than 30k views. My mouth drooled just watching what the finished results of chips looked like.

So, I decided to give both the nuggets and chips ‘fakeaway’ a go at home. The recipes for both of them looked pretty straight forward and I had all of the ingredients in too which made life easier.

The nuggets:

For the nuggets you literally need; chicken breast, half a potato, one egg, cornflour and salt and pepper. After boiling the potato until cooked, you put all the ingredients into the blender until smooth.

Once blended, it is said to shape the mix into a rough nugget shape before spraying with low calorie oil and popping them to cook in the airfryer for 20 minutes. However, this was nearly impossible as with the vile, sticky chicken concoction you could not do this. I feel sick just thinking of that wet chicken mix stuck to my hands.

The chips:

As you can imagine, just potatoes, salt and oil were needed to make the chips. I wanted to get the chips as close as I could to Maccies shape and sizing.

I peeled the potatoes, sliced them, coated them in salt and patted dry. Once dry, simply popped the potatoes in a pan of hot oil and let them simmer until golden brown.

The verdict:

After going to so much effort for a meal I could’ve had in five minutes if I’d driven to Maccies, it was a disaster. To start with the nuggets, the only place they belong is in the bin and definitely not on my plate.

The nuggets didn’t resemble Maccies nuggets nor what they looked like on the Instagram video which was the first downfall. I thought, let’s not judge a book by its cover and told myself they may surprise me when I tried them.

Oh was I wrong. I bit into the nugget, and nearly gagged. The texture of the nuggets resembled a gone off fish cake. I honestly wouldn’t even feed them to my dog.

To top off the catastrophic chicken nugget experience, instead of spending the night peacefully sleeping, I was up during the night and throughout the following day vomiting. I think this may have put me off Maccies chicken nuggets for a little while, which breaks my heart.

I wish I had read the comments on the chicken nuggets video before making the decision to try these. One person said: “I hope you read this comment before you waste your time and materials, I nearly vomited twice”. While another added: “Made it tonight and it’s legitimately inedible” and a third commented: “Do not do it. It will be raw from the inside”.

To my surprise, the chips were lovely. But you can’t really go wrong making chips, can you?

Overall, I wasted an hour and a half of my life making the ‘at home’ Maccies but I guess if you don’t try, you’d never know. It’s safe to say, I will be sticking to the real deal from now on.
