After seeing Linda Evangelista's beautiful blooms, I caught up with expert florist David Denyer from Eflorist, who discussed the biggest mistakes people make when caring for these blooms. First up: Neglecting to trim the stems.
'One of the most common mistakes people make with cut peonies is forgetting to trim the stems after the initial arrangement,' David says.
'Take the flowers out of the vase every two to three days and re-cut each stem at a 45-degree angle under running water. This prevents air pockets from forming in the stems, which can block water absorption. Re-trimming encourages better hydration, revives drooping blooms, and can significantly extend the life of your display.'
Next, we should be careful not to place our peonies in areas with too much sunlight.
'While peonies thrive in full sun when growing in the garden, cut peonies respond very differently once indoors. Placing them near a sunny windowsill, radiator, or any heat source can cause them to open too quickly and fade within days,' David adds.
'To preserve their delicate petals and slow down the blooming process, display peonies in a cool, shaded part of the home – ideally a room with indirect light and consistent airflow.'
