Andy Robertson has admitted Liverpool’s hopes of defending the Premier League title are all but over after the Reds lost to Brighton on Wednesday night.
Jurgen Klopp’s side ended their 30-year wait to be crowned champions of England last season, finishing 18-points clear of second-placed Manchester City.
However, the Reds now find themselves seven points behind Pep Guardiola’s side after their loss to the Seagulls, with City boasting a game-in-hand.
After a club record 68-match unbeaten run at home in the league, Liverpool have now lost back-to-back home matches against Burnley and Brighton ahead of hosting Man City in their next match at Anfield on Sunday.
And Robertson admitted the Reds can no longer consider themselves to be in the title-race after falling so far behind City.
“Any game against Man City is a big one. As this moment stands, we’re not in the title race," the Scot told BBC Sport. "We are seven points behind them and they have a game in hand.
"I’m sure they’d say the same if they were potentially 10 points behind. We need to get back to the Liverpool everyone knows.
“We’re still a good team. We don’t turn into a bad team overnight.”
He continued: “We prepare for every game differently. It’s just not clicking. We need to find a way to get results, especially at home. You can do everything in training.
“Brighton were the better team. We were hugely disappointing all over the park.
"You have to give the the team credit for playing well. They created chances, pressed us – did everything we wanted to do.
“We didn’t really do anything of note. With a long record of going unbeaten we’ve lost two. When you don’t show up you don’t get results.”
