'I'm sorry guys' - Allan Saint-Maximin's heartfelt apology to Newcastle fans

Newcastle United's Allan Saint-Maximin apologised to fans after the club twice failed to protect their lead against Southampton to end up drawing the game 2-2.

The Frenchman thought he had secured all three points as he netted from close range with 91 minutes on the clock but the Saints, just as they had done earlier in the second half through Mohamed Elyounoussi, pulled the scores level.

James Ward-Prowse converted a penalty in the sixth minute of additional time to prevent the Magpies from a much-needed win.

Callum Wilson, against the run of play, had put United one-nil up 10 minutes after the break after heading home a Jacob Murphy cross but in truth, Southampton dominated.

Saint-Maximin was often United's only threat and the theory that giving the ball to him is the game plan was only reaffirmed on an afternoon where his teammates offered little assistance.

Taking to social media, Saint-Maximin said: "We did our best - I'm sorry guys."

Head coach Steve Bruce felt the full force of the St James' Park crowd with loud chants calling for his sacking heard for the first time.

The Magpies head into the international break without a win in their opening three Premier League games.
