'I'm sick of saying it' - Jamie Carragher agrees with Gini Wijnaldum over Liverpool issue

Gini Wijnaldum had to agree with Jamie Carragher following Liverpool's latest Premier League defeat.

The Reds were beaten 2-0 by Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Saturday evening.

It was Liverpool 's fourth consecutive home defeat and leaves the defending champions languishing in sixth place in the table - 16 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

Richarlison opened the scoring for Everton early on and Gylfi Sigurdsson wrapped up the points from the penalty spot in the closing stages.

Carlo Ancelotti's men now only trail their neighbours on goal difference, and with a game in hand, after their first win at Anfield since 1999.

Liverpool have been hampered by injuries this season, particularly in central defence, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Fabinho all currently sidelined.

And makeshift centre-back Jordan Henderson joined the injured list after being forced off during the Everton game.

Much has been made of Van Dijk's lengthy absence, having been such a pivotal part of last season's title success.

But Carragher believes the excuse is getting somewhat tired now.

“Liverpool have been so poor, they have got everything deserved," the former Reds defender said on Sky Sports.

"They can't keep saying: 'Virgil van Dijk is out'. I'm sick of saying it myself."

Wijnaldum echoed those sentiments after the match, telling Sky Sports: "Losing players during the season upset us a lot. We cannot play the victims, we have to deal with the situation and not feel sorry for ourselves.

"We have to give until the end of the season, it is painful and you could see it on the faces of the players. That is the situation we are in right now and we have to deal with it.

"Winning games in the Premier League is always difficult and the injuries don't make it easier, we still have a squad who can change it around and we have to work harder to change it around."

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com, the Dutch midfielder added: "This is a new situation we are in right now. In the previous seasons when we created so many chances, we always scored a goal.

“And now we’re in a period where we create a lot of chances but don’t score the goal. It’s frustrating, especially when you’re on the pitch and you’re playing.

“You don’t want to feel sorry for yourself and don’t want to go into the victim role.

“You just want to deal with the situation and try to bring it to a better end, or a good end, even if you know that you have a lot of injuries.

“I think that’s how we should look at the situation, not be the victims but just try to turn it around.

“We have a lot of games to turn it around – if we’re going to look at the situation as victims it’s going to be worse.

“What we can do is just try to give everything, try to keep confident and work all together to bring it (the season) to a better end.”

Liverpool return to Premier League action next weekend when they take on rock bottom Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Sunday.
