'I'm really, really hungover' - Sam Fender on BBC Breakfast after celebrating Newcastle takeover

Spare a thought for Sam Fender, who has a busy day after a very heavy night celebrating the Newcastle United takeover.

Sam launches his new album, Seventeen Going Under, today.

The Geordie singer-songwriter was up bright, early and bleary-eyed this morning for a live interview in the BBC Breakfast studio.

Sam, 27, wore the same Newcastle United tracksuit top he had on last night at the takeover party outside St James' Park, where he helped lead an impromptu performance of Magpies anthem 'Local Hero' and drank late into the night despite a busy day ahead launching his new album.

Sam, who has also announced a new tour, admitted to BBC Breakfast presenters that he is "really, really hungover".

"We did Jools Holland and went straight up to St James'," Sam explained.

"My saxophone player, Johnny, got on the statue, played Local Hero, and 5,000 Geordies just started singing along.

"I did about a thousand selfies, got proper mobbed, but everybody was absolutely class and gave us a load of cans, and I'm really hungover. I'm really, really hungover.

"But, well, yee kna, these things happen, don't they?"

Thousands partied on the streets and in the pubs near Newcastle United's stadium on Thursday as news of the long-awaited takeover was confirmed, spelling the end of Mike Ashley's time as club owner.

There is hope Newcastle's billionaire Saudi buyers will inject millions into both the club and the city.

"I'm really happy for the fans, for the city and what probably might come from it, economically," added Sam.

"We're chuffed but there's a lot of stuff in question that we probably need some transparency on, in the future."
