'I'm on my way' - Didier Drogba teases return to Chelsea after surprise Petr Cech decision

Chelsea's surprise decision to name Petr Cech in their Premier League squad has got one club legend thinking about a return of his own.

Clubs in the top-flight of English football were required to name a squad of 25-players by 2pm on Tuesday.

For Chelsea, the usual suspects such as N'Golo Kante, Olivier Giroud, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Tammy Abraham, Jorginho, Christian Pulisic, and Mateo Kovacic were all named in the squad.

The same applies to summer signings Thiago Silva, Timo Werner, Edouard Mendy, Ben Chilwell, and Hakim Ziyech.

Meanwhile, club-record signing Kai Havertz has been named among the under-21 players alongside the likes of Mason Mount, Billy Gilmour, Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

However, the big surprise was that Cech has also been included - and that's despite retiring from football after losing the 2019 Europa League final in Arsenal colours against the Blues.

"Petr Cech has been included in the squad as emergency goalkeeper cover," a Chelsea spokesman said. "This is a precautionary step due to the unprecedented conditions currently caused by the Covid-19 crisis. He takes up a position as a non-contract player."

Cech's inclusion prompted a massive reaction on social media as many Chelsea supporters quite positive about the decision, one even claimed it proves that head coach Frank Lampard has lost faith in Kepa.

But could Cech be reunited with another Blues legend in the coming weeks?

Well, Didier Drogba has joking teased that he's on his way back to the club's training ground after catching wind of Cech being named in the Premier League squad.

"I’m already on my way to Cobham," he said in response to a tweet which urged him to get his boots back on.

It's highly unlikely that Drogba will make a return given the attacking options at Lampard's disposal.

With that said, Chelsea fans are likely to appreciate the gesture.

Speaking of Lampard, he explained the decision after watching his side draw 0-0 with Sevilla.

"Yes, Petr has been training with the goalkeepers for a little while now," Lampard said in his post-match press conference. "He has been training a lot of days with them which is valuable for the experience [of the other goalkeepers] and that he is passing on that quality to them.

"We had that space in the squad and we know this year, it looks like no other because of Covid and isolation so it was a very easy one. Pete still does his day job and he is there if we need him."
