'I'm not worried about if I can or can't do it' - Kyle Eastmond's first thoughts after signing for Leeds Rhinos

Kyle Eastmond insists the lure of a new challenge is what convinced him to return to rugby league.

Leeds Rhinos shocked the world as they announced the capture of the former St Helens and England ace, who has spent the past decade playing rugby union.

But he will spend the next two seasons at Headingley after agreeing to return to the 13-man code, and is now focused on hitting the type of form that made him a sensational talent in the early stages of his career.

"I think the word is challenge," he said.

"Which obviously is what I like, it's something I've done before, so it will be tricky but I've got the understanding, I've done this before, I'll come in here and work as hard as I can with the coaches and the players and hopefully be in a good place pretty soon.

"I just know I'm ready to start working and preparing best I can. Let's take it each day at a time and prepare like that."

He continued: "Just being honest, the thing for me is how good can I be individually and how much can I bring to this team? I'm not really looking back at unfinished business, but playing the best I can and getting this club achieving what it should be."

Eastmond doesn't believe converting back to league will be as big a challenge as suggested, admitting that there had been opportunities to return to the sport in the past.

"I don't see it as too tricky, I just think it's a time thing, I've done this before, I've achieved at quite a high standard in this game, I'm not worried about if I can or can't do it, the question is time and I'll put the work in and I'll do it.

"There have been times when I thought about it and it hasn't quite come off, but I'm at a stage where a new challenge is right for me. I've been playing union now for nine and a half years and I feel like I've achieved my goals of what I set out to do and now a new challenge is a good thing at this stage of my career, that's why I think this is the right time.

"I've kept an eye on what's going on over the years. Miss it? If I'm honest, it's not the word, I'm a focused player on what I'm doing and while I was playing rugby union I was fully focused on achieving my goals. I was never looking back or outside what I was doing, but what I can see is I'm excited, I can't wait to get going and see where we can go."
