'I'm in my 50s and my partner takes ages to get aroused - I worry I don't turn him on'

Dear Coleen, I’m a woman aged 52 and have been with my partner a couple of years – we’re both divorced and met online.

Things are good between us, but I worry that sex doesn’t do it for him or that I’m not enough and don’t turn him on.

He takes ages to get aroused, but he always says he enjoys sex and he’s happy.

I can’t help thinking he’s just saying that so I don’t feel bad.

What do you think?

I think if he’s telling you he enjoys sex and he’s happy, then you should take him at his word.

You can obviously talk about sex, which is good, so why not ask him what he likes or if there’s anything he’d like to try that you’re not doing.

But don’t make it into an issue if it’s not – that will only affect his confidence in bed and he might begin to worry that you’re not satisfied. If you’re both happy with the way things are, then relax and enjoy it.

It can be difficult coming out of long-term relationships and starting again with someone new, and getting used to what each other likes, but you sound like you’re making a good job of it.
