'I'm honoured' - Adam Webster rewarded for stunning debut campaign by being named Bristol City Player of the Year

Adam Webster has been rewarded for his outstanding debut season at Bristol City by scooping both the club's Player of the Year awards.

Bristol City announced the winners on Friday evening, in a departure from the traditional presentation following the final home game of the season, with Josh Brownhill claiming the Young Player of the Year honour for ths second season running.

Webster claimed the honours voted for by City fans through the Supporters Club & Trust and the honour via the the Senior Reds.

Webster signed for the Robins last July for just £3.5 million from Ipswich, a day after the departure of club favourite Aden Flint but quickly struck up a solid partnership at the heart of the defence alongside on-loan Chelsea defender Tomas Kalas.

Is Adam Webster the midfield general Bristol City need to stop Derby County?

The Webster-Kalas axis has been among the elite defensive combinations in the Championship this season and proven the bedrock for City's play-off push as the Robins lie just a point outside the top six ahead of Saturday's pivotal clash against Derby County.

Webster told bcfc.co.uk : "I’m very honoured to receive these awards and a big thank you to those who nominated me. Credit should go to the rest of the lads though as we are very much one squad who all work hard for the cause.

"I’ve really enjoyed this first season and everyone, players, staff and fans have made me very welcome."

Webster has showcased not just his defensive talents in winnng headers, blocking shots, makling tackles and overall reading of the game but also in his technical attributes as the 24-year-old has been one of the best passing centre-backs in the division.

He has also developed into an auxiliary central midfielder which head coach Lee Johnson has turned to in the second-half of the season providing extra defensive protection, a position he could grow into owning as he progresses.

Playfully nicknamed 'Webdini' by certain sections of the City support, Webster's arrival and subsequent improvements highlights not only the club's outstanding recruitment, as a profit was made on the £7m received for Flint on a younger, perhaps even better, model, but also the coaching of Johnson and his team.

Young Player of the Year Brownhill is another example of both as the 23-year-old, who arrived from Preston in 2016 on a free transfer, has become City's midfield fulcrum following the injury suffered to Korey Smith in August.

The Brownhill (3,708) and Marlon Pack (3,828) combination has been a constant as the two midfielders have played the most minutes for the Robins this season.

Brownhill has also matured into an effective all-round midfielder , equally capable of breaking up play and launching attacks, emphasied by his five goals and four assists.

"I've been here three seasons and really enjoyed my time here so to pick up a couple of awards on the way it feels great, to have my performances recognised by supporters feels great," said Brownhill.

"On a personal note for the season, I feel like I've had a very good season - I've chipped in with a few assists and more goals than last year and I'm playing in midfield so it's been a good year for me.

"But overall as a team it's been exceptional, we've put on some fantastic performances throughout the season.

"Adam Webster has been excellent since he's come here, I feel he's been a big part of the team even though he hasn't been here for that long.

"But to be in the position we're in, the majority of the team has done brilliant and I'm sure that's not gone unnoticed by the fans."
