'I'm grey at 31, I used to feel ashamed but now I have embraced the change'

It’s hard to ignore the stigma surrounding grey hair – especially when boxes of hair dye actively encourage covering up those pesky strands of silver.

But one woman on TikTok is combating the stigma head-on by embracing her greys after she began to notice her hair changing colour prematurely.

The 31-year-old woman, who posts under the username @pipjduma, spent years dying her hair black to cover up her greys, but decided two years ago she was going to let her natural hair shine – and couldn’t be happier with her new look.

She said in a video: “I’ve been growing out my natural grey hair for two years.

“In October 2019, when I was 29 years old, I decided I’d have enough of constantly dyeing my hair to cover it up – so I let it grow and let go of all the shame and embarrassment I’d ever felt around being so grey at such a young age.

“I let go of the stigma and idea of a ‘beauty standard’, and I’ve honestly never felt so free. I love my greys.”

The woman’s video has received millions of views, with people praising her for helping to normalise grey hair for other women.

One person wrote: “Gorgeous! And I’m sure you’re helping normalise grey hair for other women, which is so valuable. There’s nothing wrong with our natural states.”

To which the woman replied: “Thank you! That’s exactly what I want to try and do, because it is normal, and we shouldn’t have to feel ashamed of it.”

And someone else said her video had helped her gain confidence in her own hair, as she said: “Me being 19 years old and having grey hairs from being 14-15. This has made me feel so confident, this is really what I needed to see. No more dye!”

The woman in the video then explained she’s also been finding grey hairs on her head since she was young, as she responded: “So glad to hear that! I started getting greys at age 12 and it really used to upset me, but I’m learning to love them now.”

Other commenters also pointed out that dyed grey and silver hair is fashionable amongst young people – and many people pay good money to achieve the same look as the woman in the video.

Someone wrote: “Your hair is ace, I pay for that colour!”

And another said: “I just paid £200 for this hair.”
