'I'm frightened to go out' - Elderly residents react as woman injured in disturbance in Irlam

Elderly residents living in sheltered accommodation in Irlam say they are frightened to go out after a disturbance.

Police descended on The De Traffords at around 2am this morning (Saturday).

A woman is understood to have received a minor injury.

No more details about the incident have been released by Greater Manchester Police.

Residents reported seeing a large police presence in the area shortly after 2am.

A police cordon was erected on the residential street, which consists mainly of sheltered accommodation housing for the elderly.

Elderly residents living in the area say the latest police activity comes after a spate of incidents in the area.

One woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "We are in sheltered accommodation and they have moved some troubled people to the area.

"There are residents in their 80s and 90s here and we have had enough.

"It's a nightmare. I'm frightened to go out because you don't know what is coming next."

The woman described waking up to see the road outside taped off by police. She reported seeing 'a lot' of police and an ambulance.

Another resident, who asked not to be named, said: "At about 1.45am I thought someone was knocking on my door but then I realised it was the police.

"They cordoned off the road and said there had been an incident.

"I'm not sure what had happened but I know a group of people had been really drunk.

"It's mainly sheltered housing around here. People are either infirm or elderly and are supposed to be protected.

"This is not the first time police have been down here. A few months ago there were armed police down here."

Another resident said he saw two young girls throwing objects at a window at about 2.30am on Saturday morning, before seeing police descend on the street a short time later.

A spokesperson for GMP said: "Officers were called to a disturbance just after 1.10am this morning (5 June 2021). A woman received a minor injury."
