I’m Fine (Thanks for Asking) review – rough-edged yet spirited US drama

Recently widowed and now homeless, Danny (Kelley Kali, who co-directs) has persuaded her eight-year-old daughter that they are camping next to a highway for fun. Meanwhile, Danny scrapes together a deposit for a new home by hair-braiding and making food deliveries on her roller-skates in the sweltering Los Angeles sun. But the careful mask of positivity is starting to slip, and Danny can’t catch a break.

A little rough around the edges certainly, but spirited and authentic, this is a low-budget African American indie that has a kinship with the Dardenne brothers’ brand of breadline urgency.
