'I'm coming into my peak' - Ex-Bristol City stopper Frank Fielding believes his best is yet to come after joining Millwall

Frank Fielding insists his best days are still ahead of him after completing his transfer to Bristol City 's Championship rivals Millwall.

Much-loved goalkeeper Fielding was released by City at the end of last season after six years of exemplary service including playing a major role in the 2014/15 double winning side.

At 31, Fielding still has plenty of years ahead of him, especially in a position where individuals tend to mature at a later stage than outfield players.

"As I always say when I am asked, I think I'm coming into my peak years as a goalkeeper now," Fielding said.

"I'm always looking to improve, to try and get better, and I think this is the place for me to do that.

"I don't look at myself in particular on the pitch though - I'm not selfish - I look at the team getting results on a Saturday, Tuesday or whenever we play."

Fielding has been handed the No1 shirt for the Lions and is currently the Lions' only registered first-team goalkeeper.

David Martin signed for West Ham earlier this month while a move to sign Bartosz Bialkowski from Ipswich collapsed this week after the Pole failed a medical.

The likelihood is that after an desperately frustrating final season at Ashton Gate where he lost his place to Niki Maenpaa due to illness only to injure his hand on his first-team return, Fielding will be lining up in goal for the Lions when they kick off against Preston North End on August 3.

"I'll look to pass on my experience any way I can," he added.

"I want to ensure we are better, I want to come in and improve us as a team, and make sure we get the wins on the board.

"I'll always look to share my experience and ideas with the squad and I'm still learning myself, so I'm definitely looking forward to a new chapter here."

There will be at least one familiar face in the dressing room as Fielding is joined in east London by another former Robin in Alex Pearce.

The centre-back, who was a teammate of Fielding's at BS3 in 2016, has made his loan move from Derby into a permanent following the expiration of his contract at Pride Park.

"I know Alex Pearce from when he came to Bristol City some time ago, he's an unbelievable character with bags of experience," Fielding said.

"That will help me settle in quickly, and I just want us to go for an improvement on last season, and for us to climb our way up the table."
