I'm being made redundant – should I work my notice or leave immediately?

Twice a week we publish problems that will feature in a forthcoming Dear Jeremy advice column in the Saturday Guardian so that readers can offer their own advice and suggestions. We then print the best of your comments alongside Jeremy’s own insights. Here is the latest dilemma – what are your thoughts?

I am being made redundant from a job I love, in senior management in an academic field.

I could continue to work for another six months under the terms of my notice period, but my instinct is to leave as soon as possible (which would be allowed), as I have already been through a long period of consultation and feel I can’t make any progress in my job search until I am free of my current set-up.

My concern is this: how much of a disadvantage do I put myself at if I am looking for work but no longer in a job?

I could stay for stability but fear I may put myself under mental stress as I would obviously be treading water in a job I’ve been in for a long time and will find hard to leave. I would just be prolonging the agony.
