I'm being distracted by the noisy eating of a new colleague

Twice a week we publish the problems that will feature in a forthcoming Dear Jeremy advice column in the Saturday Guardian so that readers can offer their own advice and suggestions. We then print the best of your comments alongside Jeremy's own insights. Here is the latest dilemma – what are your thoughts?

I work in a small, open-plan office. A few weeks ago, a new person started and sits opposite me. She seems perfectly nice, but is an incredibly noisy eater – and she eats all day. She is constantly snacking and chomping.

I find the noise particularly distracting and my attention is often drawn away from my work, so that I am forced to get up and leave my desk.

I'd like to find some way of letting her know, politely, that her constant, loud eating is a distraction. I don't want to upset her – she is new after all – but I'd like her to be a bit more considerate.

Do you need advice on a work issue? For Jeremy's and readers' help, send a brief email to dear.jeremy@theguardian.com. Please note that he is unable to answer questions of a legal nature or reply personally.
