'I'm a vet and the worst thing you can do is treat your dog like a baby'

For many of us, our pets are part of the family. But it's important not to treat pooches like children, a vet has warned.

The expert said anthropomorphising your dog is the biggest mistake pet owners make, as it can lead to all sorts of behaviour issues. Thankfully, the pro, who believes we're in the midst of a 'behaviour pandemic', dished out advice for humans and their four-legged pals.

Rory Cowlam, also known as Rory the Vet, said it is lovely how much people care for their animals and that this is not the problem. Where she does see cause for concern, however, is when owners baby their pets.

"The piece of advice I always give to new owners is to be the relaxed parent," Rory told Country Living.

The celebrity vet also recommended taking your pup to the pub and passing them around to meet your friends. The key is to remain relaxed as dogs pick up on our emotions.

"They feed off your nervousness and anxiety," the expert explained. Similarly, she warned against picking up your pet if you come across a larger dog on your walk. "It's about being relaxed as a pet parent because so many people are really highly strung about their pets, and unfortunately this will then pass on to the dog."

Sharing similar advice, Yorkshire Canine Academy trainer Jacob Morgan explained why it is important owners socialise puppies at a young age - provided they've had all their vaccinations.

"Between eight and 16 weeks is a key developmental time for your puppy and as owners it's our job to show them all sorts of experiences, environments and people they may encounter in the future.

"This helps to avoid them feeling anxious or unsure if they were to be exposed to this situation for the first time when they are older."

His suggestion: "Try to get out and about with your puppy as much as you can during this time to get them used to different sounds, smells and textures.

"If you're walking them in a busy town you’re probably going to get lots of people trying to stroke them, so this is a great opportunity to reinforce your training to help your puppy focus on you instead of all these distractions."
