'I'm a smackhead': Moment burglar is arrested in frantic police chase after officers catch him red-handed

This police body cam footage shows the moment cops arrested a burglar following a Christmas Day stealing spree.

The dramatic clip shows police arresting Christopher Day after finding him inside a student house in Withington on the morning of December 25 last year.

The 48-year-old from Moss Side was spotted by a neighbour breaking into the empty property on Amherst Road, a court heard.

Police were called and officers found Day in the kitchen of the house.

He tried to flee the scene and threw off his jacket and pockets full of jewellery.

Officers chased Day into a nearby garden and he was arrested.

The body cam footage shows Day eventually surrendering to officers, telling them: 'I'm a smackhead, I'm a smackhead'.

A search of the house found that he had been into eight rooms of the property - forcing entry into seven of them.

Day, of Aston Avenue, Moss Side, was jailed for two years and four months at Manchester Crown Court on Friday (January 22) after pleading guilty to eight counts of burglary.

He was also fined £190.

Police Constable Ben Pickup, of GMP's Problem Solving Team, said: "This was an all-round fantastic result; right from the neighbour contacting police, to officers catching Day as he tried to flee on foot, right to him being held accountable for his actions and brought to justice in court.

"Day is a criminal who tried to take advantage of the occupants being away from their address at Christmas by entering the property and taking whatever he could, particularly jewellery.

"I am glad he will be spending next Christmas behind bars.

"This case exemplifies the endeavours of local officers working with the PST to catch any criminals who commit offences such as this - burglary is a big priority of ours and we will do all we can to rid the streets of such offenders and keep the people and properties of Greater Manchester safe."
