'I'm a single mum with 3 jobs - I'm knackered but can't afford a break'

A single mum with three jobs who is struggling to cope during the cost of living crisis hasn't been on holiday for the past six years.

Emma Andrew is one of an increasingly large number of Brits who have been priced out of the holiday market.

The 36-year-old holds down three jobs as a support worker, teaching assistant and cleaner and despite working practically non-stop, she regularly goes without meals.

The Bromley, Kent mum is determined that her 15-year-old son - who occasionally comes with her to work in the evenings - has as happy a childhood as possible.

"We haven't gone away this year, there is no way I could afford it," Emma told The Mirror.

"My son was nine when we last went away, to Portugal. We had to scrimp and save to do that.

"I'd love to go on holiday. Even though places like Spain are quite cheap, it is just impossible to afford."

After working flat out often seven days a week, and following a pandemic which was challenging for many, Emma is desperate for a break.

"I would like a rest because I'm knackered," she continued.

"We all deserve it, but I am pennies away from the breadline. I don't even know how I afford my rent each month.

"I'm not turning on lights, I'm not cooking if I can help it. I was thinking of taking my son away camping, but the problem is petrol is now so expensive."

Like many people struggling to stay afloat, Emma's delicate financial situation was thrown off balance by a single unforeseen issue - in her case, when her green energy provider went bust.

Despite making multiple attempts to find out who her new provider was, there was a long delay before she got any information through.

When she eventually did, a combination of arrears and fines for late payment meant she had to sign up to a £200-a-month repayment scheme to get herself out of debt.

In this effort she has been helped in part by Nous, an app which helps people track their outgoings.

"I am really grateful for Nous," Emma said. "There is nothing out there like it. It's a godsend."

Research conducted by the tech company found that a quarter of Brits who are going away this year will choose a cheaper holiday than usual, while a quarter will also be looking for a budget break in the UK rather than abroad.

More than a third of the 2,000 people they surveyed said they weren't going away this year as they struggle to cope with soaring energy bills, the cost of filling the car, and the rising price of groceries.

Nous CEO and founder, consumer champion Greg Marsh, said: “It's sad that people are having to cut back on their well-deserved annual holidays.

"We're proud to be providing a service to help households keep track of their finances, enabling them to get the best deal on everything they can.

“If they know exactly how their personal cost of living will increase, they can budget accordingly – even if it means making sacrifices.

“The free nous app and online dashboard tool can really help you keep your head above water in these difficult financial times.”
