'I’m a security expert and homeowners always make a simple mistake when it’s cold'

Burglars are just as likely to break into your property in cold weather as they are in the warmer summer months, a home security expert has warned homeowners as temperatures across Britain plummet.

It is a common assumption that burglars will not break in when it is chillier because people are more likely to be spending time indoors.

However, an expert locksmith has revealed that is simply not the case and that burglars are out on the prowl whatever the weather.

Elizabeth Johns also said that many Brits make a common mistake during the winter by not wanting to stand outside in the cold ripping up large cardboard boxes.

Many will leave these boxes, often which have branding of high-cost items such as TVs or games consoles, leaning against the bin - giving burglars a key indicator as to what they will find inside your home.

She told the Sun : "In the summer, it's very easy to go out to your bin and put boxes in but in the colder weather, a lot of people don't want to go out all the way to the bins to rip boxes up to put them in the bin.

"So they will leave boxes out that have markers on them of high-value items.

"Any high-value items that come in big cardboard boxes can be quite a chore to rip up and put in the bin in the colder weather."

She added that it is "vital" to ensure that these are hidden from burglars because it will alert them to the fact high-value items are in the property.
