I'm A Celebrity - what really happened to 'upset' stars when show was taken off air

I'm A Celebrity was thrown into chaos during the first week of the series when the celebrities were forced to leave the castle.

In an unprecedented move, the show was taken off air for two nights after Storm Arwen's 98mph winds battered the set and caused significant damage.

The celebs were only just adjusting to life in their new Welsh home when they were evacuated from Gwrych Castle and returned to quarantine.

So what really happened when the famous faces left and the cameras stopped rolling?

Olympic diving hero Matty Lee, who finished in fifth place, has revealed exactly what he and his 'upset' campmates went through amid the mayhem.

The Tokyo 2020 gold medalist told The Mirror that the celebs wanted to stay together so hated being forced apart by ITV bosses - but were allowed access to luxuries.

"Where we slept there was a roof but there was a big draft coming through so it wasn't a completely closed building. Leaves were flying in and everything," reveals Matty.

"It's quite blurry but as a group of campmates we had just started to get into the rhythm of things and then this happened which was a bit annoying and threw us all off a little bit."

As the storm erupted, the campmates were told they could not sleep in the living quarters and took their sleeping mats to the floor of the main camp fire room.

After their "really fun, big sleepover", the celebs were taken down the marble staircase to the Great Hall the following day.

"They called it 'the safe room' at the time because I think it was the most stable place in the castle," says Matty.

"It was strange, we didn't really know what was going on. The safe room we were in that for the majority of the day, that was still legitimately the castle set.

"One of the ITV members came in and told us they'd have to go off air for a few nights. We had to go back into isolation."

At this point the experience took a drastic twist.

The celebrities asked to stay with the campmates they had been getting on with but were told everyone had to be alone.

They were taken to a completely separate place to where they had isolated for the two weeks before the series started.

"It was so annoying," admits Matty. "Snoochie hated that. People were more upset about leaving that night and being on their own than staying. We wanted to be together but we weren't allowed."

The I'm A Celeb stars were not allowed to have their phones back and were stopped from watching TV in case they got any outsider information.

However, it wasn't all bad as the celebs were pampered for a night and one full day.

"It was nice, we could eat what we wanted for a couple of days, shower and be in a warm house," reveals Matty.

Matty says one of the people he was closest with was The Saturdays singer Frankie Bridge, who became "like a big sister" to him.

While we did see him clash with Naughty Boy over rice, Matty says the music producer was "a really nice guy" and that tensions are heightened in the camp.

One person who was very eager to tune in was Matty's diving partner and close friend Tom Daley, who he won gold with in the Men's synchronised 10m platform event in the summer.

"I was really surprised he actually watched it. Usually he doesn't have the time in the day," says Matty.

Tom was the first person to message Matty when he was eliminated and video called him the following morning to speak about his time in camp.

Matty continues: "He told me he was super proud of me, particularly about the conversations I'd had with Frankie around mental health. And when Danny was talking about his [ Emmerdale ] character being gay and I spoke about my experiences with bullying because I was a diver.

"With that sort of a TV show you don't know how it's going to go. I'm confident I'm a good person but you never know what they'll air. It was worrying and he was worried for me but in the end he was super proud."

The major struggle in camp was food, with the campmates even creating games involving fantasising about what they would eat when they got out.

Matty is taking part in the #EatMoreDriedFruit campaign to raise awareness of the health benefits of dried fruit, something he was desperately craving in the castle.

"With my career I've used dry fruit as a great snack between training," explains Matty.

"It counts as one of your five a day and as a country we're not very good on that, so dry fruit is an easy way of doing that. It's a great way of getting your natural vitamins and minerals in and it's tasty.

"I wish someone had left me a pack of dry fruit in the castle every day. The amount of food you crave in there is incredible and that's all you're thinking about."

It's been non-stop for Matty since leaving the castle, as he presented the Young Sports Personality of the Year Award and received an MBE in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to diving.

Matty didn't know he would be presenting teenage skating sensation Sky Brown with the award until 10 minutes before and says the nerve-wracking experience was a "privilege".

After leaving the castle on the Friday night, Matty was straight back into diving training on the Monday morning and completed the whole week.

"I was knackered. I don't think it was a sensible thing to do what I did sometimes you have to throw yourself back into the deep end, quite literally," he jokes.

He was finally able to have some well-earned time off back in Leeds over Christmas, but now has his eyes set on the Paris Olympics in 2024.

"Obviously training is my priority. I'm A Celeb came at the best time straight after the Olympics," he says. "When we get closer to the next one my sole focus will be on diving.

However, he would consider more reality TV in the future and even speculated he could become a Hollywood actor like fellow diver Jason Statham.

He adds: "I would absolutely love to do more reality TV.

"It was so much fun and I think people now not only know me as an athlete but as a personality which is really cool. I'd like to say I was liked."

Matty Lee MBE is taking part in the #EatMoreDriedFruit campaign to raise awareness of the health benefits of dried fruit. Just 30g of dried fruit is counted as one of your five a day and contributes to your fibre intake.

Tasty and versatile, dried fruit is a natural snack that’s full of vitamins and minerals; perfect for between meals, on top of a salads, cereals, yoghurts and in smoothies.
