I'm a Celebrity star Victoria Derbyshire says cancer has made her more 'fun'

News presenter Victoria Derbyshire said her battle with cancer convinced her to take part in this year's I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here.

The 52-year-old said beating breast cancer had made her more likely to say 'yes' to things and to throw herself into life.

Admitting her BBC colleagues will be surprised when they find out she is going to the Welsh castle, Victoria, says cancer has taught her to have fun.

She said: "This is a mad thrill adventure that I want to take part in, because of cancer, I know more than lots of people, life is short. I am now saying ‘yes’ to stuff I wouldn’t have done previously. And if I don’t do my boys proud, I will never live it down.

"They really, really want me to do it and they have kept it a secret for months now because they want me to do it so much.

“They do think it is cool I am doing it because this is their programme of the year.

"My husband is also so happy I am doing it. He thinks I will love it, throw myself into it and he said if it makes me happy, he is happy. They are on the journey with me."

Victoria said she was most looking forward to having a "laugh" in the show, after the seriousness of reporting on the coronavirus pandemic, but admitted she would find it hard not knowing what was going on in the outside world.

Victoria said: "I will find it difficult not knowing what is going on in the news but there is nothing I can do about that.

“But it will be absolutely surreal, I keep up with the news minute by minute every day and suddenly there will be a void but that is also quite thrilling because we will have to fill it by finding out about each other and working as a team. It will be a digital detox.”

Victoria also revealed what she'd been doing to try to prepare for the show and the inevitable trials.

She said: "Whenever I see a spider now I allow it to crawl on my hand. Obviously it is only one but it makes me feel like I have achieved something.

"I am also trying other food and I ate pigs’ cheeks the other week. They were delicious but they had a lovely sauce with them.”
