I'm A Celebrity star to miss 2021 final due to Covid rules

The I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! final is fast approaching and viewers at home will be looking forward to some end-of-series-traditions.

As fans of the show will know, each season ends with the Celebrity Cyclone — an epic challenge that sees the remaining campmates try to stand upright as they're pelted with water canons on a slippery aqua slide while dressed as superheroes — as well as the return of last year's winner.

And while wait to hear whether or not the Celebrity Cyclone will take place, especially following extreme weather in the local area, it seems Giovanna Fletcher will not be returning to Gwrych Castle to hand over her crown.

Giovanna won the 2020 series of I'm A Celebrity, which was the first one to take place in Abergele instead of the Australian jungle.

Traditionally, the previous year's champion gets the honour of crowning the new winner during the live final but Covid fears means the best-selling author will not be visiting camp.

A source told The Sun: "ITV would have loved to have Giovanna back, she was a hugely popular winner last year.

"But due to Covid rules — even with the show coming to an end on Sunday — it was decided they couldn't take the risk without her isolating, which is a lot to ask for a one-minute cameo."

Last year 2019 winner and EastEnders actress Jacqueline Jossa was also unable to return for the same reason.

Vernon Kay, who placed third in the competition, crowned Giovanna instead.

Addressing her absence last year, Jacqueline told her Instagram followers: "People have been asking why I didn't go to hand the crown over...

"Couple of reasons - one; we are rehearsing for a West End musical and I literally don't have time to go to Wales and back. Also we're in a global pandemic so it's not like the best idea ever to do that anyway.

"It's all socially distanced and I think it worked really well how it worked with Vernon.

"Obviously if it was under different circumstances, I would have loved to have handed it over to G. I really wanted it to be her from day one."

I'm A Celebrity continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
