I'm A Celebrity star's Derry connection uncovered in social media post

A star of this year's I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here has been receiving support from Derry after a charitable connection to the city resurfaced.

Footballing legend David Ginola has quickly become a fan favourite in this year's competition, with other celebrities fawning over him as well as hosts Ant and Dec addressing him as 'legend' at each trial contestant reveal.

However, a surprising source of support for Ginola has come from our very own Derry City Football Club.

Earlier this week, Derry City Football Cub took to social media to voice their backing for the French footballer.

On Instagram, the post said: "#TeamGinola If you're looking for a tenuous link to this year's #ImACeleb we're backing David Ginola.

"The Frenchman lined out for City in a charity game for the Omagh Trust back in '98."

Ginola wore the Derry City jersey in October 1998 for a charity match after the Omagh bomb that summer.

A report from the Irish Times the day after the match took place said: "Tottenham's sophisticated Frenchman, David Ginola, upstaged Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy at the Brandywell last night in the special benefit game for the victims of the Omagh bombing.

"Ginola, who lined out for the Derry City selection, thrilled the capacity attendance of 10,000 with his silky skills and incisive passing movements."

The charity match raised an estimated £70,000.
