I’m a Celeb’s Sam Thompson discusses pressure to have children: ‘My circumstances are different’

Sam Thompson has opened up about the pressure he has faced to have children during an episode of I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!

The former Made In Chelsea star, 31, has been dating Love Island alum Zara McDermott, 26, since 2019, and the couple moved in together during lockdown.

During Wednesday night’s instalment, viewers watched as Thompson confided in fellow campmate Josie Gibson about why he isn’t rushing to start a family as he asked her about hosting This Morning

Gibson shared: “Five years ago [I started hosting This Morning]. It’s such a good gig. I will say this, my career didn’t kick off until [my son] Reggie was a few months old.

“Everybody thinks you have a baby and your life is over. It was totally the opposite for me.”

Which prompted Thompson to ask: “Do you have a plan?”

Thompson was candid about his personal life in camp during Wednesday night's episode (ITV)

The former Big Brother star said: “Because I’ve always wanted to work for This Morning and I’ve always wanted to be a TV presenter I feel like, in my head, I feel like I’ve sort of made it because I’ve got to where I wanted to be.

Thompson responded: “That’s what everyone looks for”, to which Gibson said: “A lovely place to be. What do you want?”

The social media star admitted: “I want to get to that stage really, Josie, where you’re at, where you’re like, ‘Do you know what? This is me’.”

Gibson commented: “You’re going to be the best dad as well.”

In response, Thompson said: “Thanks, Jose. It’s kind of tough to explain this, a lot of people – you not included – a lot of guys who are like, ‘Mate, you need to have kids, you need to have kids,’ and I’m like, my circumstances are different to yours.”

Thompson admitted that a driving factor in why he isn’t rushing to have children is because McDermott “is doing so well” in her career.

The former Love Islander recently appeared on Strictly Come Dancing and has fronted a number of documentaries for the BBC.

“My girlfriend and I would never want to take this away from her, is doing so well. I know she doesn't want to give that up. And she shouldn’t have to,” he said.

“There will come a time where we'll both be like, ‘Yeah, now’s the time’, but I just don't think it’s now.”

Showing her support, Gibson added: “I had Reg at 33 and I’m so glad I had him at that age as well, because I really lived my life.

“I totally lived it. If anything happened to me tomorrow, Sam, I have had a blinder. I’ve had a real good time. Until you feel like that, you know, hold out.”
