I'm A Celeb fans 'feel sick' watching plank challenge and compare to Squid Game

I'm a Celebrity fans "felt sick" watching the first challenge of the new series, which saw four campmates walk along a plank more than 200 feet above a lake in a remote quarry.

In the opening episode, the celebrities were split into two groups, with one consisting of broadcaster Louise Minchin, music producer Naughty Boy, Emmerdale actor Danny Miller and radio host Snoochie Shy.

They made their way in helicopters to a quarry in North Wales, where they were met by Ant and Dec for their first official challenge - excluding the traumatic journey there.

The presenters explained that they would be paired up and compete against their partner, with the winner of each heat able to choose which of the other celebrities would represent them in the next challenge.

The challenge itself required the campmates to walk along a plank and stand near the end, waiting for a red light to turn green. Once this happened, they needed to press a button using their foot - with the fastest celebrity winning.

Ant said: "The red lights will start to flash and when the green light comes on, you must press the button with your foot. The first celebrity to hit their button will win and the loser will be dropped from their plank."

Louise competed against Danny, whilst Naughty Boy was racing to beat Snoochie. The loser in each heat - which were Danny and Naughty Boy - were subsequently dropped from the platform and suspended briefly over the quarry.

Like the campmates, viewers weren't keen about taking on the challenge, with one tweeting: "I'd be terrified, I know they have a harness but still, no way."

Another wrote: "I don’t think I could think of anything worse than this challenge. The idea of the plank dropping makes me feel sick." A third said: "Wouldn’t do this challenge even if it was to save my own life. Feel dizzy just thinking about it!"

"That challenge is brutal, I definitely couldn't do it," said one viewer, whilst another added: "The height challenges make my legs turn to jelly."

One viewer said they "literally felt sick at that," whilst another said: "I'd actually wet myself."

Others said that the ITV series seemed to have been inspired by Netflix's Squid Games, which saw characters compete in fatal challenges for the chance to win money.

"This is like Squid Game (minus the really grim outcome)," wrote one viewer. Another tweeted: "Taking some ideas from Squid Games are we boys."

Another said: "I can't be the only one getting squid game vibes here." Whilst a third mentioned the infamous first game on the fictional show: "For me this is worse than red light green light."

I'm a Celebrity continues on ITV tomorrow night from 9pm. Catch up on the launch episode through the ITV Hub.
