'I'm 70 and live in Wales': 24-year-old Mancunian's insurance lie caught out after police stop him speeding on M56

A 24-year-old driver caught speeding on the motorway told his insurance company he was a pensioner living in Wales.

The driver was stopped by Greater Manchester Police's Traffic team on the M56 this morning (April 20).

In a tweet, police said the car was recording speeding at 108mph.

It was later discovered the driver told his insurance company he was a 70-year-old man living in Wales.

He was in fact aged 24 and lived in Manchester.

The man took out correct insurance while at the roadside. He was reported for summons for excess speed and insurance offences.

A tweet from GMP Traffic said: "Driver stopped M56. Recorded speed at 108mph.

"Driver had told insurance company he was 70 years old and lived in Wales. He was 24 years old and lived in Manchester.

"Reported for summons for excess speed and insurance offences. New correct insurance taken out at roadside."

Last week the M.E.N reported some drivers have been driving at dangerous speeds on parts of Greater Manchester's near-deserted roads.

Traffic cameras have clocked 6,293 speeding drivers since the government announced the lockdown on March 23.

According to GMP, some areas have seen a 57 per cent increase in speeding offences.
