'I'll go down for murder for her': Woman brutally attacked pal with meat cleaver - over £20

By Andrew Bardsley

A mum launched a horrendous meat cleaver attack on her friend following a petty row over £20. Zara Robertson, 36, hit her pal over the head several times with the fearsome weapon.

After the appalling attack, Robertson said: "I'll go down for murder for her, I'll kill her." The friends, who also lived on the same street in Miles Platting, had been drinking together in the hours leading up to the shocking incident.

Robertson had agreed to lend her friend £20. Shortly after, she left Robertson to visit a relative, but returned back at her home at about 9pm on March 19 last year.

Robertson became 'agitated' and demanded the £20 back, and she called a taxi to take them to a nearby cash point. Her friend refused to get in and as she walked back to her home, there was a 'scuffle' as Robertson tried to force her in to the car, prosecutor Daniel Lister told Manchester Crown Court.

Suddenly she realised that Robertson had armed herself with a meat cleaver, before she was hit four or five times to the head with the weapon causing heavy bleeding. "Get my money," Robertson said after the attack.

She followed the woman, who was able to push Robertson away. As she left the scene, Robertson said: "I'll go down for murder for her, I'll kill her."

Robertson was arrested shortly after. She racially abused a nurse in a police station, calling her 'white trash'. As the nurse tried to help her, Robertson added: "You pigs have caused this, you're part of the problem."

The court heard her victim was 'fortunate' to not be more seriously hurt. She suffered three wounds to her head which need stitches, as well as a mark on her neck.

Months later she continues to suffer from migraines, panic attacks and blurred vision. "There are some days I struggle to get out of bed, and feel like I am unable to do anything," she said.

Robertson, who was said to be 'ashamed' of her actions, has nine previous convictions including being jailed for two-and-a-half years for attacking an elderly man who had been 'supportive and friendly' towards her. Defending, Alexandra Sutton accepted Robertson has an 'unattractive' criminal record, which stems from problems with drink and drugs. She has since made progress while in HMP Styal, the barrister said.

She added: "The challenge for her will be translating the positive steps she has made in a custodial setting into the community, that won't be easy for her and she knows that." Judge Nicholas Dean QC accepted that Robertson was remorseful for her behaviour.

He said: "You are fortunate you didn't cause more underlying harm by way of a fractured skull or something of that sort."

Robertson, previously of Canada Street, Miles Platting, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and racially aggravated harassment. She was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison.
