I’ll Give You the Sun was a joy to read from beginning to end. It follows the lives of twins Noah and Jude as they battle through the hardships of growing up and a tragedy that rocks their lives to the very core.
Noah is falling in love with the enigmatic boy next door, Brian, while Jude is still trying to figure out what love really is.
The book is filled with beautiful imagery making it a truly magical read and I was gripped the whole way through. Nelson writes from both the points of view of Noah and Jude at different points in time, jumping back and forth between the two. This not only created suspense as the time gap had clearly left out a tragedy that had changed both twins, but also allows the reader to connect with them as well.
I got a real sense of the sibling relationship between the two which, having a brother of my own, made me more invested in the story.
As a fifteen year-old this book covered some relevant themes for me that would maybe interest other teens. It discusses LGBT themes as Noah finds it difficult coming out to his family worrying about how others may react, something that some people could relate to.
The book also involves the issue of teens being peer pressured into things they don’t want to do. This is something that almost every teen can relate to and it’s something that takes place quite often at school.
I found this book easy to follow so think it would make a great summer read; it’s a real page-turner so you want to start it when you have time to spare. I highly recommend it.
